New Futures - Arts Collaborative Residency is a 4 months program organised by Initiatives of Change USA in partnership with Art Africa Magazine and Exploring Visual Cultures Network. Taking place both online and in person in Johannesburg, it brings together 15 artists from 11 different countries to reflect on the issue of mining through the investigation of both physical and historical sites.
The proposition has been to approach mining not only as a material practice of extraction but also as a metaphor for a mode of existence rooted in possession and separation. Learning from artists, researchers, and activists from South Africa and beyond, we are examining the intersections of mining with colonial histories, systems of exploitation, and global capitalism.
