Arina Theunissen, Let’s not do our makeup! 75x20cm, 2023
Arina Theunissen (b. 2002) in the East Rand is currently a Fine Arts student at the University of Pretoria. The artist is interested in furthering her knowledge and skills in the art industry. She has been exposed to a variety of art mediums such as painting in acrylic and oil, drawing, cement, welding, and bronze sculpture, pinhole and digital photography, and mixed media. Mixed media however is predominantly the medium she resonates with.
The artist enjoys using found materials such as scraps of paper and fabric to create her artworks. For her aesthetic is not an end, but rather about pushing materials beyond representation. Her artworks address personal accounts of growing up financially strained and gaining independence young because, her parents were employed full-time and often away. Her work speaks to these experiences through experimental work with found materials. The artist often sources her materials from home. Her work processes a poetic quality aimed at eliciting an affective experience within the viewer.
Theunissen has participated in the Albert Luthuli 2021 Exhibition, and the 2022 and 2023 Undergraduate Exhibition.
