FR: Co-esistenze est une série de 5 photographies en noire et blanc qui traite de stéréotypes. Pour cette exposition, nous avons choisi une seule en raison de lien avec l’arrestation fortement médiatisée de Patricia et Shakiro, deux transgenres camerounais qui ont été condamnées en mai 2021 pour «tentative de comportement homosexuel».
Cette photographie représente un homme qui porte une robe, des bijoux féminins et des chaussures d’hommes assis sur un tabouret. Son pied gauche supporte sa tête posée sur sa main gauche. La dissymétrie de la composition et la dominance des lignes de ruptures obliques rompent avec l’apparente stabilité suggérée par le tabouret. Son habillement symbolise sa différence face au conformisme social et de genre. Au Cameroun, dans une société encore sous la domination hétérosexuelle, ces problématiques sont encore taboues. Ce cliché traite finalement d’égalités de genres face au droit. Il nous invite à apprécier chaque individu dans sa singularité mais aussi, à questionner les normes sociales pour une bonne cohabitation.
EN: Co-esistenze is a series of five black and white photographs that deal with stereotypes. For this exhibition, we have chosen only one because of its connection to the highly publicised arrest of Patricia and Shakiro, two transgender Cameroonians who were convicted in May 2021 of "attempted homosexual behaviour".
This photograph shows a man wearing a dress, feminine jewellery and men's shoes sitting on a stool. On his left knee his hand, on it his head. The asymmetry of the composition and the dominance of oblique lines break the apparent stability suggested by the stool. The clothing symbolises the difference from social and gender conformity. In Cameroon, in a society still dominated by heterosexuality as a norm, these issues are still taboo. This picture is ultimately about gender equality in the face of the law. It invites us to appreciate each individual in his or her singularity but also to question social norms for a good cohabitation.
FR: De son vrai nom Léon Marcel Landry OWONA KYE, l’artiste LOKOL KYE est née le 28 Juin 1995 à Yaoundé au Cameroun.Il est diplomé de photographie et audiovisuel à la Libre Acadèmie des Beaux-Art de Douala où il vit et travaille. Il se décris comme un « feeling photographer » et les émotions sont au cœur de la démarche artistique. Ses sources d’inspiration sont multiples à l’instar des photographes comme Henri CARTIER-BRESSON, Richard AVEDON et Malik SIDIBE qui ont eu une forte influence sur son processus créatif.
EN: The artist LOKOL KYEH, whose real name is Léon Marcel Landry OWONA KYE, was born in 1995 in Yaoundé, Cameroon. He graduated in photography and audiovisual media at the Libre Acadèmie des Beaux-Art in Douala where he lives and works. He describes himself as a "feeling photographer" and emotions are at the heart of his artistic approach. His sources of inspiration are multiple like photographs of Henri CARTIER-BRESSON, Richard AVEDON and Malik SIDIBE. They had a strong influence on his creative process.
