AI-Infused Arts

An exhibition by students of the Art and Multimedia program at the Institute of Art Education, Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich.

Curated by Dr. Karin Wimmer

As part of a seminar with students from the Art and Multimedia program at LMU Munich, we explored the significance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in contemporary art. The goal was to develop a deeper understanding of how AI programs work and to investigate how they can sustainably influence and expand artistic practice.

A key focus of the seminar was examining various approaches artists take when incorporating AI into their work. Some artists view AI as a creative partner that inspires and enriches their creative process, while others critically address questions of authorship and originality. By analyzing the works of renowned artists such as Mario Klingemann, Hito Steyerl, Sofia Crespo, Tamiko Thiel, and others, the students gained insights into the diverse ways AI is used in artistic contexts.

Another central topic was the discussion of ethical challenges posed by the use of AI in art. Issues such as copyright, the appreciation of human creativity, and the boundaries of machine autonomy challenge established structures in the art world. Students were encouraged to critically reflect on these topics and to develop forward-thinking perspectives.

In the practical component of the seminar, students were tasked with creating their own artistic work. This process allowed participants to question and redefine the impact of AI on their own creative practice.

This exhibition AI-Infused Arts presents the results of the intensive engagement. It highlights the diverse possibilities of AI in art while simultaneously challenging us to confront the ethical and societal questions it raises.
